In April 2013 a mother found me on The Tutor Pages website that no longer exists. It was for her son who was only at a Level 2 in Maths in Year 7. He got an A* in his IGCSE Maths in 2017 which is like a Level 9. I was incredibly happy along with the family and the son who had worked very hard.
The story was most interesting along the way. We started off with 2 lessons a week, then it soon became 3 lessons a week all the way up to his Maths IGCSE. Only once was a lesson ever cancelled and not rescheduled in those four years. This was the most amazing reliability and the boy did not seem stressed having 3 hours a week with me.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this was he went to UCS School in Hampstead and not only because someone was struggling so much at such a good school initially but also because the family could find three hours a week for our lessons with such a busy school schedule. Apparently an issue the family had with the school was they left the pupil to their own devices too much or certainly for this child. I took that to mean the school don’t spoon feed the pupil when they are struggling.
It was such a lovely family to work for and they were always respectful towards my time and they made me a lovely coffee too. They cared about their children’s education a lot but they were not too strict. It was a perfect balance to my mind which matches my experience with the family. A truly once in a lifetime experience, I think.
